Mardi Gras wheels in the crowd
A ride with the bicycle-based medical teams that help the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department provide rapid response in the middle of Mardi Gras.
For years now, the MFRD stations ambulance crews around the perimeter of the parade route. While more than a half-dozen two-man bicycle teams patrol the interior. They can get to the scene quicker. Riding side streets and the route itself, or pushing their way through the crowds of spectators when necessary. They determine whether an ambulance is needed.
Typically each team has one firefighter certified in Advanced Life Support and one who’s an Emergency Medical Technician. Augmented by a couple of pedaling doctors.
