SpokeFest has grant available to promote bicycle education
KXLY – 4/17/14
SpokFest has offered the Bicycle Education and Safety Grant Fund for the past four years. In the past it has been used to purchase bikes and provide teacher training for the East Valley School District, allowed the East Kiwanis to give away free helmets to area kids, provided 30 bikes and helmets for the Central Valley School District’s bicycle education program, and helped Pedals2People provide bicycle lights and helmets for Spokane County residents. However, this year, SpokeFest hasn’t received any applications for the grant.

Bicycle riders, motorists equally at fault for crashes, study shows
Lafayette Journal & Courier – 4/17/14
Bike accidents were most prevalent in September, on Wednesday, during late afternoon — between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. — and in clear weather conditions on dry pavement.

The Ol’ Sleeping Bicycle Gets a Modern Update
The Atlantic Cities – 4/17/14
Thanks to the creative work of New York-based architect Dimitrios Spyropoulos, the pedal-powered sleeper-car has received a modern update. This new version, inspired by the original Boston trek, eschews a trailer for a seat that folds out into a bed. An accordioning carapace akin to a convertible’s soft-top provides privacy for snoozing and protection from the weather.  Three wheels and a low center of gravity keep the vehicle stable, like a wide recumbent bike (or in this case, something resembling a recumbent baby carriage).

Benchmarking report shows slow, but steady, increase in bike commuting
Bicycle Retailer – 4/16/14
Commuters are slowly but steadily switching to walking or biking to get to work, and the more people who walk or bike, the safer they all are. Those are two of the conclusions from the 2014 Benchmarking Report published by the Alliance for Biking & Walking. The report, published every two years since 2003, is one of the Alliance’s key initiatives and is now available for download from the group’s website.
