Bike Shaped Objects

Funky bikes and news
Is mountain bike art?

When people posr bikes on eBay the main picture can tell you a lot about the seller. The ones that show their bikes laying in a pile of junk just don’t care. Some concentrate on some minor piece they think to be important. I think those people don’t really want to sell their bikes.

Then there are sellers like the current owners of this bike. You will never see a big box cheapo look any better than this. I can’t believe that the composition of this photo was an accident. What makes this photo even more surprising is that the buy-it-now price is only $45. That is a good price. If I didn’t know this bike so well I’d think they were crazy.

Where to buy cheap bikes – Property Room

I love this site, even though I’ve never bought anything through it. It’s a great way to see what bikes are worth in the real world.

Some of the auctions are for single bikes but the majority are for groups of bikes. Unfortunately, they won’t ship groups of bikes so your only option is to pick them up in person at the auction location. That means if you don’t live near the location it isn’t worth bidding on.

Several times I’ve calculated the cost of going down to their LA location and getting a load but the cost of gas alone makes the venture impractical. But, if you do live near the auction spot, it’s a great way to get some cheap bike inventory.

One thing to watch for is what’s in a lot. They wisely don’t group the bikes by type so each lot may contain any combination of road, mountain, cruiser, bmx and kids bikes. So if there’s one bike type you want you’ll have to buy the rest to get it. This favors buyers with a regular outlet like a shop or flea market.

Another thing to consider is time of year. I started watching this site last Fall and saw lots of good bargains. However, by early Spring the bargains were much harder to come by. Now, as Summer progresses I’ve noticed a dip in prices.

Check out Property Room for yourself.

Tis the season to be cycling

Yard sales, Craigslist, even eBay; cheap bikes are everywhere. If I had enough room I’d have two dozen bikes right now. You have no excuse. Get a cheap bike and hit the road/trails/highways.

It does happen – old bikes on Craigslist

Look at those beauties. Yes they’re rusty and need piles of work but they are beauties just the same.

This is where I normally add the “but they’re too expensive” rant. This time I have no such complaint. The owner is selling them on Craigslist for $30. Unfortunately they are on the other side of the country. So close, yet so far.

Cops and kickers – Bike News 4/29/12

SCMPD Bicycle Officers Get Some Training Wheels
WSAV – 4/29/12
“To get on a bicycle and ride through an urban environment, through a park with a lot of people and to ride at just two or three miles an hour, making your bike stop while you are staying upright, and weaving in and out of traffic, that takes a lot of skill.”

Spending Smart: Kick the tires on a used bike
The Bellingham Herald – 4/29/12
Like new cars, new bicycles depreciate dramatically the moment they leave the cycle shop. So buying used can be a better value for your money, especially if you can score a decent ride for less than $100.
