Cycling and Seattle have shared a symbiotic relationship for over a century. The city gives a lot to cyclists, particularly with the recent Master Bike Plan which is increasing biking facilities and improving safety for cyclists throughout the Seattle area.

Franklin city streets are key to Middle TN segment of U.S. bicycle route

After years of work, volunteers have secured pledges of support for the route from government leaders, including some in Williamson County, along its path from near the Kentucky/Tennessee border to the Tennessee/Alabama border.

Dahon to produce, distribute Ford-branded bikes

The line of folding and electric bikes for adults and children is expected to launch in 2014, with specific models to be determined in the coming months. All production and distribution will be handled by Dahon, and the bikes will initially be sold through select retail channels. The Ford line will also include a range of accessories.

Electric-bicycle-sharing pilot program to launch in Berkeley, San Francisco in 2014

Last Tuesday, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency board of directors granted $1.5 million for the program, which aims to increase mobility for Bay Area commuters, reduce emissions and lessen traffic congestion in the Bay Area. The program partners City CarShare, a Bay Area nonprofit car-sharing service, with the Transportation Sustainability Research Center at the UC Berkeley Institute of Transportation Studies.

Self-service bicycle repair station installed northwest of UC Berkeley campus

The do-it-yourself repair station is the first of three planned by the UC Berkeley Office of Parking and Transportation as part of a wider effort to accommodate increasing demand for bicycle services on campus and in the city of Berkeley.

A number of reports over the last few years have illustrated the economic benefits of building bicycling infrastructure: from job creation to reductions in health care spending, investment in bike lanes and paths (as well as walking infrastructure) pays off. Now the League of American Bicyclists has updated its 2009 study 28The Economic Benefits of Bicycle Infrastructure Investments, and the news continues to impress. Bicycle manufacturing, infrastructure development, and bike-focused tourism are still strong bets in an economy still struggling to grow. Nearby bicycling facilities even improve home values.

Study Shows Bicycle Helmets Save Lives
US News and World Report – 10/14/12
Cyclists who died of a head injury were three times less likely to be wearing a helmet than those who died of other injuries, according to the study, which was published in the CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

Community to launch affordable bicycle exchange for residents

Volunteers at the bike exchange will fix up used bikes collected from donations and sell them at affordable prices, said Brian Stromberg, a volunteer coordinator for the New Brunswick Bike Exchange.
