A boom in bicycle tourism

bicycle tourismTourism officials and cycling advocates sometimes refer to tourists on bicycles as “wallets on wheels.” That’s because they stay longer in a state and spend more per day than other tourists. Oregon, for example, has found that bicycle tourism contributes $400 million a year to its economy — roughly $1.1 million a day. It was the first state to create a Bike Friendly Business Program that helps businesses market to bicycle tourists.

More than half of Cycle to Work participants feel their productivity has improved

The Cycle to Work scheme is benefitting both employees and employers according to a survey into its participants, with 86 per cent of those taking part believing that riding to work has led to health benefits. In 2014, over 180,000 people had signed up to the scheme – a rise of 11.6 per cent from the previous year.

Officials ban half of Beijing’s cars amid emergency smog alert

There’s big trouble in not-so-little China today, as the capital of the People’s Republic has issued the direst of smog alerts for the first time. The so-called Red Alert was issued on Monday as Beijing’s air-quality index crept above 300 out of 500 for the third consecutive day. Any score above 300 is considered “severely polluted,” according to China Real Time.

Ann Arbor weighing tax increase for pedestrian and bicycle safety

Depending on the actions of the City Council, Ann Arbor voters could be asked in 2016 to increase their taxes to pay for pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements. The issue of safety on city streets has gotten a fair amount of attention in the past two years, and recent fatal bicycle crashes have sparked new conversations.
