What is the single most powerful (and awesome) thing an individual can do to promote bicycling? Organize a pub crawl.
A pub crawl? Okay, sure, it sounds flippant. But I’m serious. One person riding a bike to the bar isn’t bad (it’s sure better than driving), but five friends riding together is safer and more fun (you can take the lane!). When you invite the world and twenty people come, the multiplier effect starts: Everyone who sees your parade go by smiles, and 15 out of those twenty people will go on to become major movers and shakers in your local bike group. When the ride snowballs to six hundred people one July night and the bar runs out of beer, congratulations: You have built a cycling community.
